Hollywood meets Data at Big Data Day LA
The organizers of Big Data Day LA are passionate about one goal – to make Los Angeles the next big tech hub for data.
Subash D’Souza, the organizer-in-chief, talks about founding Big Data Day LA in 2013 with 250 attendees, “Big Data Day LA was started with the thought of promoting a quality conference for all without the costs associated with it. Most quality conferences cost several hundred to thousands of dollars. I believe that we could do the same for zero to a very low fee.”
Today, illustrating the expanding interest and focus on data in Los Angeles, Big Data Day LA has grown to over 1,800 attendees expected this year. The conference is run entirely by a massive team of 250 volunteers and attracts speakers representing the diversity of industries in Los Angeles – Kaggle/Google, City of Los Angeles, NASA, Netflix, Edmunds, MariaDB, to name a few.

Big Data Day LA 2017 was a huge success yesterday! 14+ hours in one day, 100+ volunteers assisting 1,700+ people with thirst of knowledge while sharing cases, technologies and trends. It was another great experience and a result of a lot of planning #bigdatadayla #bigdatadayla2017 #usc #netflix #bigdata #free #volunteers #teamwork #sponsors
This year, Big Data Day LA is leaning into the heritage of Los Angeles – Hollywood. The Startup Showcase Competition, a resounding success in its debut year last year, is returning this year with a focus on Media and Entertainment and a judging panel comprised of Warner Bros, Disney, Hulu, Netflix, USC, NBC Universal and TenOneTen Ventures, an LA-based VC firm that also sponsored the Startup Showcase last year.
With most technology and entertainment companies maintaining a presence somewhere between Santa Monica’s Silicon Beach to San Diego, Big Data Day LA is sponsored by the who’s who of both worlds – BMC, Accenture, Hortonworks, Databricks, Qlik, MemSQL, Qubole are sponsors alongside entertainment giants like Warner Bros, Hulu, Netflix, Verizon and previously Disney, and tronc.
The tracks evolve every year to match the trending topics in technology – this year’s tracks include Data, Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning / Data Science, Emerging Technology, Infrastructure & Security, and Visualization / User Interface / Use Cases, and adds new limited space 4-hour tutorials in Data Science and Blockchain.
Big Data Day LA is on Aug 11, 2018 at University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Interested in attending? Register here with code “TECHCRUNCH10” for 10% off registration.
