Rex Richardson is the 29th Mayor of Long Beach. He is a husband, father, and trailblazer as the first Black mayor in the city’s history.
Mayor Richardson is a regional leader, having served as the President of the Southern California Association of Governments—the largest metropolitan planning organization in America—and as a board member for the South Coast Air Quality Management District.
He is a recognized regional thought leader on issues of government innovation, inclusive economic development, and advancing racial equity in local government. As a City Council member, he led the creation of the City’s Office of Equity. In the wake of COVID-19, Richardson led the creation of the Southern California region’s Inclusive Economic Recovery Plan, the establishment of the Long Beach Recovery Act, and the Long Beach Racial Equity and Reconciliation Plan.

Since taking office, Mayor Richardson has led with his Opportunity Beach Agenda, by placing a focus on housing, building an inclusive economy, creating safe and healthy communities, investing in youth, and supporting a sustainable and resilient city.
Guided by his personal experience as a first-generation college graduate, with roots in labor and community organizing, Mayor Richardson is deeply committed to creating a city that uplifts and empowers all of its residents, regardless of their background or circumstances.
As the leader of the 42nd largest city in America, he recognizes the unique opportunities and challenges that come with such a diverse and dynamic community, which is home to the nation's second-largest seaport and one of the fastest-growing tech clusters in the country. His vision is to build a city that fosters innovation, celebrates diversity, and creates pathways to success for all who call it home.
Mayor Rex Richardson and his wife Dr. Nina Richardson are proudly raising their two young daughters, Alina and Mila, in the North Long Beach community.
