Shadnaz Asgari, PhD

Professor and Department Chair at California State University, Long Beach

Dr. Shadnaz Asgari has more than 15 years of experience in research and education applying artificial intelligence in medicine, with over 85 peer-reviewed publications and $3.5M in research and educational funding. She has led interdisciplinary curriculum development in applied data science, including bioinformatics and Health Informatics. A long-time promoter of women’s advancement in STEM, Dr. Asgari is a member of NCWIT and the founding faculty and first Chair of the Biomedical Engineering department at CSULB, where 50% of students are women—the highest representation in engineering and computer science at the university. She earned her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from UCLA, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship applying machine learning in neurosurgery, a visiting professorship at the University of Cambridge (England), and a Faculty-in-Residence appointment at Google headquarters.
