Reza Rassool

Reza Rassool is Chair and CEO of Kwaai, a nonprofit AI lab and developer community democratizing AI through an open Personal AI Operating System that individuals own and control. A RealNetworks Fellow and former CTO, he led the company’s pivot from legacy streaming into AI leadership, creating the SAFR and Kontxt divisions and guiding the transition from a declining public company to a valuable private entity.

A serial startup founder and “start-up pro,” Reza has created more than 1 billion dollars of exit value through companies including Zya and Widevine Technologies, both acquired by Google. His innovations range from Technical Oscar and Emmy–winning digital movie editing systems and one of the world’s first VOD servers to cochlear implants, bionic eyes, and edge-AI systems, and he holds over 24–27 US patents in fields spanning computer vision, bio-medical devices, and hybrid cloud media.

Reza remains a hands-on developer across Rust, C/C++, DSP, embedded, mobile, and cloud platforms, and is a frequent speaker at industry events, where he advocates for ethical, open, and privacy-preserving AI. He holds a B.Sc. in Physics from King’s College London and balances his technical leadership with family life as a husband and father of four, as well as passions for cooking, writing, and painting.
