Reza Rassool

Reza Rassool is the Chair and CEO of Kwaai, a nonprofit AI lab that wants to put powerful “Personal AI” tools in everyone’s hands—not just big tech companies. His team is building an open Personal AI Operating System that you can own and control yourself, with a focus on making AI safer, faster, and greener for real people and real communities.

Before Kwaai, Reza helped transform a major streaming media company into an AI leader, creating products that recognized faces and protected online conversations from spam and abuse. He’s a “start up pro” who has founded multiple companies, including Zya and Widevine Technologies, which were both acquired by Google and together created over a billion dollars in value.

Over his career, Reza has worked on everything from digital movie editing systems that won a Technical Oscar and Emmy, to some of the first video on demand servers, to medical technologies like cochlear implants and bionic eyes that help people see and hear. He holds more than 24 US patents in areas like computer vision, biomedical devices, and cloud media, and still codes today across embedded, mobile, and cloud platforms.
Reza speaks around the world about ethical, open, and privacy preserving AI, and why Personal AI should respect your data and your story. He studied physics at King’s College London and now lives in California, where he balances building future technology with being a husband and father of four, plus side passions for cooking, writing, and painting.
