Empowering the State of California to adopt analytics engineering at scale
My team has trained 20+ State staff from three departments on data and analytics engineering concepts and modern data tooling like GitHub, Snowflake, and dbt Cloud.
Our team trains State staff through a service we offer, the Modern Data Stack Accelerator (MDSA). Training plays a critical role in the success of each MDSA project overall and the long-term sustainability of the new infrastructure and analytics code we help departments build and write.
Our full training program is 3 weeks long and focuses on the concepts of data modeling, git and version control, CI/CD, writing YAML and modular SQL, and more! The training includes pre-work plus a one day deep dive into git and GitHub, two days on a cloud data warehouse, and four days on analytics engineering. In between those days we host office hours to give staff a chance to ask questions, catch up, or show off what they're learning and how they're implementing it into their workflow.
This session will have 6 parts:
- Overview: Learn about ODI and CalData
- Challenges solved: How we used a modern data stack as a solution
- Tactics used: How we trained State staff
- Impact made - Success metrics and a case study showcasing our results
- Lessons learned: Mistakes we made, feedback we gathered, and how we iterated
- Resources: How to scale this kind of training at your organization
